I really enjoyed reading this book, especially the heartbreaking portrayal of a moral and ethical German soldier and his family caught up in a morally corrupt regime. Jan’s search for his lost sister was inspiring but unrealistic and not believable- but gives the reader hope for miracles. I’d like to believe that determination and fortitude can lead to happy endings, and that the serious PTSD and damage to the souls can be treated with love and care. Fortunately, the Allied forces won the war, and the Red Cross reunited families, but the damage was devastating. This book gave a new perspective on the war from the eyes of a 10 year old fighting for survival and searching for his little sister. Just wanted to cry and pray for world peace.
