The Silverado Squatters

In the early 1880s, Robert Louis Stevenson traveled to California, where he was to meet his ailing future wife. He had also been stricken ill at the time, but not being able to afford adequate housing the pair decided to squat in an abandoned mining camp near Mount Saint Helena. They spent two months there recovering their health and writing. Oddly enough, he would use the description of the picturesque green hills in his sea story Treasure Island. For a Scottish take of life out west or for a small slice of Americana, Silverado Squatters offers a memoir unlike many others.
