Publisher Description
From the award-winning author of The Accomplice and The Passenger comes the first novel in the Spellman Files series, featuring sharp-tongued private investigator Isabel “Izzy” Spellman—a quirky, rule-breaking PI with a talent for trouble and a family that’s even more dysfunctional than her clients.
At twenty-eight, Izzy Spellman works for her parents’ San Francisco–based private investigation firm, where boundaries don’t exist and everyone is fair game for surveillance—including each other. Between dodging her parents’ micromanaging, outwitting her perfect lawyer brother, and trying (unsuccessfully) to be a good role model for her surveillance-obsessed teenage sister, Izzy is barely holding it together.
When she decides to leave the family business for good, her parents give her one final assignment: solve a fifteen-year-old missing persons case. But as Izzy digs deeper, a new disappearance hits dangerously close to home—turning her last job into her most personal case yet.
Fast-paced, irreverent, and full of heart, this witty detective novel blends family drama, romantic misadventures, and sharp humor into a standout mystery perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich and character-driven crime series.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Cracking the case can get complicated and outrageously wacky when a family of detectives is involved, but Lutz has a blast doing it in her delicious debut. Isabel "Izzy" Spellman, a San Francisco PI who began working for Spellman Investigations at age 12, could easily pass as Buffy or Veronica Mars's wiser but funnier older sister. Izzy digs TV, too, especially Get Smart (an ex-boyfriend's ownership of the complete bootlegged DVD set is his major selling point). Now 28, Izzy thinks she wants out, but elects to take on a cold case while dealing with 14-year-old sister Rae, a nightmarish Nancy Drew, and parents who have no qualms about bugging their children's bedrooms. At times the dialogue-heavy text reads like a script and the action flags, but these are quibbles. When Rae suddenly disappears, Izzy and her family must learn some serious lessons in order to find her. Can the family that snoops together stay together? Stay tuned as a dynamic new series unfolds. 150,000 first printing.

Surprisingly enjoyable
As a snobby reader of mostly literary fiction I was very pleasantly surprised by how compelling I found the characters & storyline. Quite well written, I don't recall even once being annoyed by lousy grammar, stiff dialogue, or predictability. Far more than I expected of the genre. Kudos to Ms. Lutz. A fun and memorable read. I look forward to more of the quirky Spellman family in her other books.
Quirky, fun
I picked the Spellman Files up when I was facing a long hospital stay, and the fast moving, funny novel made that experience a little more bearable. The Spellman Files, and all it's subsequent sequels, wraps you up and keeps you warm, and the characters that Lutz masterfully crafts stay with you long after the novel is finished. This series is part mystery, part romance, part humor, and I can't recommend it highly enough. It made me truly fantasize about becoming a private eye and engaging in all sorts of glorious hijinks!
Loved this book!
So funny!! Can’t wait to read the others.
