Book one in the New York Times and USA Today bestselling humorous contemporary romance by Denise Grover Swank.
Megan Vandemeer meant to tell her parents about her broken engagement, but a month and a half later she finds herself boarding a plane home to her wedding. Having stretched avoidance to its limits, it's time to come clean--a terrifying prospect since her mother is sure to blame her rather than her cheating, emotionally frigid ex. A couple of drinks and two Dramamine later, Megan finds herself spilling her sob story to the tall, dark, and handsome stranger in the seat next to her.
With only one week left to save his business, Josh McMillan boards a plane to Kansas City in a last-ditch effort, leaving the details to chance. An unexpected answer is delivered in the form of the beautiful brunette beside him. Though she’s completely loopy, her honesty, openness, and humor charm him. So when she passes out before landing, he helps her off the plane--a good deed that leads to a colossal misunderstanding. Her parents assume he’s her fiancé. In a twist of fate, the mix-up might help Josh save his business, so he plays along, figuring he can help Megan too. All he has to do is stage a public break up convincing enough to appease her mother.
Josh is only supposed to be a substitute groom, but the more time he and Megan spend together, the more their pretend engagement starts to feel real…and the less they want to break it off. Can a relationship that began as a farce turn into happily ever after?

Very slow start but it becomes amazing.
I was so excited to read this because I love the author & her Rose Gardner series and fake engagements becoming real love are my all-time favorite plots! I preordered it and eagerly started only to find I had to force myself to keep reading. The beginning was promising but the next 50+ pages were very slow going. After getting through about half of the book, suddenly I couldn't put it down! I'm not sure why I had so much trouble reading the beginning but I'm glad I pushed through. It is such a sweet love story and all the characters are so fun and REAL. I highly, highly recommend you read this book. If you find yourself feeling like I did, keep going! The last half MORE than makes up for the beginning.
Laugh, Fall in Love, Read My New Favorite!
I laughed, I held my breath, and I fell in love!
The Wedding Pact is a new favorite series after reading The Substitute!
Megan Vandemeer boards a flight home for her wedding, but the problem is she broke up with Jay six weeks ago when she found him cheating with his secretary. Too frightened to confess to her domineering and hard-to-please mother, she heads towards Kansas City with the intent to tell her in person.
Josh McMillan boards the fight to Kansas City on a last ditch effort to save his family business. He's looking for the person responsible for stealing his design leading to the rejection of his patent. The business will fail in a matter of days without answers. Leaving it up to fate, he sits down next to Megan only to inadvertently become her savior when she mixes dramamine and alcohol, passing out on the flight. The next thing he knows, he's meeting her family after passing himself off as her fiancé so he can get her off of the plane. When he realizes he is meeting the very man he suspects to have his design, how can he help but continue the charade?
What is not to love about this story? The humor is absolutely worth laughing out loud! I can't tell you how many times I found myself laughing at the one-liners and banter between the characters. Megan and Josh are evenly matched in wit, and the sparks between them only enhance the chemistry making a couple that you want to root for.
I fell in love with Megan's Gram immediately. This quirky, eccentric lady will have you in stitches with her antics. Every family needs a Gram to keep everyone in line and keep them on their toes!
The friendship between Megan, Libby, and Blair is longstanding. These girls have a connection formed by two decades of history, and they all want to see Megan happy. Blair is fiercely protective, and Libby is full of hope and doesn't mind conspiring to pave the way for Josh to stay in the picture.
You can't help but ride the roller coaster of emotions as Josh struggles with having to choose between his growing attraction to Megan and the responsibility of the people who work for his company. So much rides on him, but can he really follow through with plans that will inevitably hurt Megan? You can feel his struggle as he oscillates from both ends of the spectrum.
Whether you have read anything by Denise Grover Swank or not, this book is worth every page you turn. I can't wait for the second and third books to find out what happens with The Wedding Pact!
Fantastic heartwarming Rom-Com!!
This book made my heart smile! Once I started I hated to put it down (darn life getting in the way). Josh and Megan are beautifully constructed characters that you fall in love with immediately. Josh is...well just a great guy. Like an all around great guy - it doesn't hurt that he's absolutely beautiful. This book is different than most things Denise has written and it is PERFECT. She has to be the millennium woman of writing. She can literally write ANYTHING and make me fall in love...and so far this is the deepest I've fallen. I cried - like snotty cried out of pure joy and in my opinion if a book can make me do that - it's perfect. Denise built a love story full of deep, multi-dementional characters that feel like your best friends. You cheer for them. You cry for them. You laugh outrageously at and with them. If you're looking for a love story that touches your soul, makes you remember meeting those people in your life you just click with, and makes your heart smile - look no further because The Substitute is it.
