Poetry can be a fickle thing. A lot of it exists in the world, and especially in the Internet Age, there is a lot to sift through and read. But search no more! “The Thinking Man” by Stephen J. Fernbach is a first-rate collection of poems that will make you experience a full array of emotions. I am a pretty tough judge of poetry and I enjoyed this collection a lot. Fernbach really has a way of getting to the heart of the matter with few words and a strong sense of confidence and poise. As I was reading this book I became so pulled in that I read most of it in one sitting without stopping to check what page I was on or do anything else. I just couldn’t put it down!
Some of the poems made me laugh out loud (like “Everything I Love I Mus Hate” when he lists all the foods he is no longer aloud to eat and why) and others reeally made me think (as in “Call Me Moe” which addresses the political state of America.)
All in all, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in poetry or who likes a deep, contemplative read that still has some laughs here and there. Poetry doesn’t only have to be depressing and dark, in this book it is joyful, introspective, meditative, humorous—there are seemingly millions of adjectives that could be used to describe it but the best one is—Fantastic!
