“Come for the Gilmore Girls anecdotes, stay for the revealing truths about what it takes to build a lifelong career in and out of Hollywood” (The A.V. Club) in this candid and captivating memoir from award-winning and beloved actress Kelly Bishop, spanning her six decades in show business from A Chorus Line, Dirty Dancing, Gilmore Girls, and much more.
Kelly Bishop’s long, storied career has been defined by landmark achievements, from winning a Tony Award for her turn in the original Broadway cast of A Chorus Line to her memorable performance as Jennifer Grey’s mother in Dirty Dancing. But it is probably her iconic role as matriarch Emily in the modern classic Gilmore Girls that cemented her legacy.
Now, Bishop reflects on her remarkable life and looks towards the future with The Third Gilmore Girl. She shares some of her greatest stories and the life lessons she’s learned on her journey. From her early transition from dance to drama, to marrying young to a compulsive gambler, to the losses and achievements she experienced—among them marching for women’s rights and losing her second husband to cancer—Bishop offers a rich, genuine celebration of her life.
Full of witty insights and featuring a special collection of personal and professional photographs, The Third Gilmore Girl is a warm, unapologetic, and spirited memoir from a woman who has left indelible impressions on her audiences for decades and has no plans on slowing down.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
She’ll forever be known as flinty Connecticut matriarch Emily Gilmore, but man, Kelly Bishop has had a life, and it makes for a fascinating memoir. Starting with her early fascination with ballet—a way out of a rough childhood—Bishop tells her whole story, from her struggles as a ballerina turned Broadway showgirl through her Tony-winning breakout as the lead of the classic ’70s musical A Chorus Line (a role based on her own life, it turns out!). This quick, breezy memoir doesn’t shy away from the bad parts, like her not-great early romantic experiences and a speed addiction when she was dancing in ’60s Las Vegas, but Bishop always focuses more on lucky breaks like her marriage and her first major film role, in Dirty Dancing. Despite the title, she doesn’t even get to Gilmore Girls until two thirds of the way through, but this is such an engaging story that you’ll definitely enjoy the ride.

A top 10 read!
Wow wow WOW! I genuinely did not want this book to be over! Kelly Bishop thank you for writing such a funny, clever, and honest book. Gilmore Girls is such a comfort show to me and I always loved her character, Emily. I felt as if I were a fly on the wall recounting Kelly’s life with her. The thoughtful reflections Kelly gives as she recounts her life felt like getting advice from a good friend. This memoir is incredible, I have no words.
Gilmore Girls
Loved this book and Kelly Bishop’s verve. She’s amazing! I adored her take on Emily and to learn more about her sheer grit and determination is inspiring!
The most underrated actress in television.
She has had such a full life, from dancing and stage acting to being in television and film. It’s such a good, comforting read about her ups and down in both her career and personal life. She includes plenty of details about Gilmore Girls as well.
