Publisher Description
Guillaume's insistence on witnessing Salvat's execution pulls Pierre into a long night through Paris, where the brothers move from moonlit streets to the city's hidden underworld of hunger, prostitution, drunkenness, and police harassment. Above them rises the Sacred Heart basilica, which both men see as a symbol of clerical conquest and a bitter insult to labor, science, and progress. Their journey becomes a grim meditation on a city divided between glittering surfaces and moral ruin, leading them toward the Roquette prisons and the public spectacle of death. At the scaffold, the execution is transformed into a feverish gathering of spectators, from crude idlers and violent curiosities to fashionable onlookers like Silviane and Duthil, whose vanity and flirtation make the scene seem even more grotesque. Massot uses his influence to bring the brothers closer, and at dawn they behold the guillotine in a working-class district as a filthy machine of punishment, surrounded by officials who treat suffering as routine. Massot recounts Salvat's dignity, the failed attempt to save him, and his daughter Céline's plea for mercy. The novel then turns to the broken home of the Toussaints, where illness, poverty, and the collapse of honest labor expose a world in which even the hardworking are left defenseless.
