Johnnie Bird III had been a popular athlete at Central High in Bridgeport. However, not heavily recruited meant that playing sports in college was a long shot. At the University of Connecticut, he would have to take an unconventional route to be able to play for the UCONN Huskies under legendary Coach Jim Calhoun. The Toughest Two is the story of Bird's triumphs and struggles as a walk-on trying to gain recognition in one of the toughest and most successful basketball programs in the nation. Suffering through dysfunctional relationships and alienation from his life at home, Bird’s four-year odyssey proved that the road to being more than just the last guy on the bench comes with several twists and turns.
