Heartwarming and informative
This amazing book, which won a Pulitzer Prize, was based on historical accounts and journals. Dr. McPheeters was loosely based on a true life physician. The writing is clever and intelligent, and the story of young Jamie and his family teach us both how much things have changed (living conditions, medical treatment, travel) and yet how much some things are the same such as relationship challenges and rewards, and some extreme weather like “broiling“ heat, a direct quote. The story of the journey, to follow their dreams, will tug at your heart and enrich your mind.
What a book!
Within ten minutes, the author had pulled me in to being part of this incredible tale of a boy and his father making the overland trip from St. Louis to California in search of gold and a better life. When I read the last sentence, I immediately began to go through “finished book” withdrawal. The language makes this book. I highlighted many sentences, sometimes whole paragraphs to reference at a future date and to remind myself of this tale. It was a complete and utter privilege to read this book.
