John Smith's autobiography was published one year before his death. Smith was especially crucial in the early days of the Jamestown settlement, as he helped organize and galvanize the colonists. It was through Smith's relationship with the local Powhatan Confederacy that the settlement was able to survive and not suffer the same fate as the earlier Roanoke Colony.
