Fascinating
Liked this book but didn’t like the end. It reminds me of those dreams you have about missing your plane or appointment no matter how hard you try. Not surprising as the author is heavily influenced by Kafka, although you get the sense that even though he does not remember any of his appointments he sometimes finds himself where he’s supposed to be. . At some point you realize the protagonist who you’ve sorta kinda been rooting for the whole book, is kinda the worst. It also gives me “The emperors New clothes” vibes in how much value he e puts in his own self importance and the hot and cold reception of the town. At some point I actually harbored a theory that perhaps Boris was Ryder as a young boy, and the way he treated Boris is the way his father treated him. My goodness he was a terrible father, gosh!
Brilliant!
A brilliant journey into a Kafkaesque dreamland where time and space bend to accommodate the fertile imagination of Kazuo Ishiguro. Or to quote 'The Unconsoled's' Boris, "I really like this book. It shows you everything."
