The Underground Railroad, the latest historical fiction novel from author Colson Whitehead, tells the story of a young woman, Cora, who was born a slave. Cora grows up in Georgia where she was a slave on a cotton plantation. Life is especially hard for Cora. She is considered an outcast within the fellow Africans. She is offered escape via the Underground Railroad when Caesar comes to the plantation. He offers to take her with him. Cora agrees to take the risky journey with Caesar for the chance at living in freedom. Though, their plan does not go as expected. Cora ends up living her life constantly having to escape those who want to keep her in slavery.

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead received the National Book Award for Fiction and the Goodreads Choice Award for Historical Fiction in 2016. It was also nominated for the Kirkus Prize for Fiction in 2016.
