AD 913-Jorvik River Dock
This story starts as a story of unrequited love for shieldmaiden,Valda Porunndóttir. As she had an honorable position in Joround army, but she was in love with a man who never saw her more than a friend and respected colleague as his second in command. Except she had ruined everything and she could not stay and work for a man who could never love her back. He now has married another and has been elevated position as a noble Earl, plus he was passionately in love with his wife. However, Valda leaves her promising and respected position which causes her family to live in poverty since she was the breadwinner though her sisters a
Brynhild and Helga also contributed with odd jobs too. Unfortunately it was not enough silver for the farm and land her family desires.
Valda goes to the docks looking for work as she an excellent worker and is a phenomenal shieldmaiden and knows how to use her blade which is also her nickname. The only ship she finds an opportunity is from her first love Halfdan Ulfsson. At first she doesn’t think this is the best idea, as she does not trust him from past grievances, but she needs to help her family. Now just by looking at her you can tell she is suffering by her worn clothing, but it only makes Halfdan feel joy in his heart! As Valda was the woman who got away and still owns his heart! Now Halfdan is quite the opposite seeing his life these past years has been quite successful wearing the finest silks and having a sparkling ring on every finger. He is still so physically attractive with his sunkissed blonde hair and sky blue eyes and a well made physique with a perfectly straight white teeth. He who still has deep feelings for Valda is only too happy to make Valda part of his crew.
Halfdan is thrilled as he still cares for Valda deeply even though he feels rejected the way they split up all those years ago. Halfdan’s father is a cruel black hearted Jar. He is trying to pay his half brother Erik’s enormous debt off and make him a free man with a home and lands of his own. Many years ago his father the Jar,brought a pregnant slave Anahita home. His mother Sigrid and Erik’s mother Anahita became sister friends immediately, due that neither one cared for the evil Jar who forced himself on women! They raised Halfdan and Erik as true brothers, except when Halfdan’s mother died in childbirth and because Anahita could not save them, though she tried his father killed her.
A Jar could commit any crime without being questioned, therefore he also made Erik a slave, something Jar’s did not normally do to half children. Erik had been suffering ever since as to even pay for Halfdan’s misbehavior in his younger years. As Halfdan got older and owned his own ship he kept Erik out of his fathers reach. Now his father is forcing him to marry a noble woman his does not know, because he is his fathers heir and of course it is a handsome alliance for his greety cruel father. The only way he will agree to this if he will free Erik with a home and lands of his own. So Halddan has no choice and of course Valda is not a noblewoman so she could never be accepted as a wife of a future Jar. Something Halfdan cares nothing about but he does want to save Erik but Valda has always owned his heart. Now with her in his life again how can he marry another when the woman he loves is in his grasp?
Will Valda and Halfdan smooth over all the miscommunications and grievances of their past? Can Halfdan have the woman he loves and the save his half brother Erik at the same time? Read and find out in this extraordinary second chance romance!
Though this is the first book in this exhilarating new series called (Shieldmaiden Sisters) it is the third novel I have read by Lucy Morris that again swept me away. She has quickly become one of my go to authors that I can’t recommend enough! A book historical and Viking readers will absolutely.
