Publisher Description
A dazzling historical novel set during England's War of the Roses- the story of the courageous Anne Neville, future wife of Richard III, who comes of age in a time of chaos...
Anne Neville, daughter of the powerful Earl of Warwick, grows up during the War of the Roses, a time when kings and queens are made and destroyed in an on-going battle for the ultimate prize: the throne of England. As a child Anne falls in love with the ambitious, proud Richard of Gloucester, third son of the House of York. But when her father is branded a traitor, her family must flee to exile in France. As Anne matures into a beautiful, poised woman, skillfully navigating the treacherous royal court of Margaret of Anjou, she secretly longs for Richard, who has become a great man under his brother's rule. But as their families scheme for power, Anne must protect her heart from betrayals on both sides-and from the man she has always loved, and cannot bring herself to trust.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
O'Brien (Compromised Miss) explores the Wars of the Roses in her first historical romance for NAL. When Richard Neville, earl of Warwick, plots to marry his daughters Anne and Isobel to King Edward's brothers, Richard and Clarence, Edward disapproves of the earl's ambition. Neville joins with Clarence to rebel against Edward; their failure leads the Nevilles to France and the exiled Lancasters. Anne's father promotes her as a possible bride for Edward Lancaster, though Anne's passion for her onetime fianc Richard, now on the other side of the battle, is unabated. No matter how the rebellion goes, Anne is trapped with a husband she does not want and no way to reach the man she loves. O'Brien has excellent control over the historical material and a rich sense of characterization, making for a fascinating and surprisingly female-focused look at one of the most turbulent periods of English history.

The Virgin Bride
What a wonderful depiction of Anne Neville & the Duke og Gloucester! The War of the Roses period so fraught multi-tiered royal plots and political intrigue. It's so well written & enhanced with creative license, I couldn't stop reading until I found out what happened from chapter to chapter. Terrifically exciting! The attention to detail made me feel like I was in the midst of it all myself.
