Publisher Description
When a lady's life has been based in lies, it is difficult to discern the truth… even through love.
Miss Penelope Watterson—a wallflower, not by choice—wants revenge on the man who destroyed her adoptive family. For years she has despised the Viscount of Maplecrest, who caused her family's distress. After fleeing London due to multiple family scandals, she has been stuck in the Derbyshire countryside, and she's had enough. It is past time to take back her life and her rightful place in the ton.
Adam Coventry, the new Viscount Maplecrest, has returned to London from a stint in America where he made a fortune importing French brandy through naval blockades and then later solidified that fortune by investing in agriculture. Once his father died, he was obliged to attend to his title, yet he wishes to reside in America permanently, for he wants space between him and the insanity of the Watterson family… even if he's still in love with Penny.
Plans go awry when they both attend a summer ball and emotions beset them. Despite being enemies, desire flares, and forced proximity only enhances those feelings. As long held secrets are revealed, perceptions change, but when the foundation of Penny's life begins to crumble and truths are revealed for each of them in a highly scandalous way, something must be done. If they can't leave hurt and pride in the past, they might forfeit a love they never knew they needed.

You never know who to trust…….
This was a short novella about a quest for revenge based on the wrong information. Penelope wanted to get revenge on Adam because she held him responsible for the ruin of her family and the death of her father. Penelope’s character seemed strong willed and determined even though everyone else in her family wanted her to leave it all alone. It didn’t make sense that that alone didn’t make her question the truth sooner. Her need to hurt Adam even at the risk of making things worse for her family just didn’t make sense. It made the character seem irrational at times and somewhat unrealistic and unlikable. Adam was completely lovable as the hero if this story although his decision to be the martyr and let his name be ruined with false rumors was frustrating. I was glad that he finally told the truth especially before any real commitments were made. After years of lies from her family, the truth was revealed by Adam, and they found their HEA.
I enjoyed this steamy novella, but I did feel like it was repetitive at times especially since it was so short so I could only give 4 stars.

fine line between love and hate
Multiple scandals forced Penelope and her family to move to and stay in the country for three years. Penelope resented the isolation and vowed revenge on Adam, now Viscount Maplecrest, for his part in ruining their lives. Shortly after those incidents occured, Adam fled to America where he stayed and made his fortune until he was summoned back to England due to his father’s death. He and Penelope connected at a ball, where she started implementing her revenge. However, things did not go according to plan, and she started having mixed feelings about the whole situation. Oh to be loved like Adam loved Penelope. First he kept secrets to protect her, and then he told them to her to set her free. Armed with the truth, Penelope was able to acknowledge and accept her feelings for Adam, culminating in a steamy encounter and an improper proposal. Her brother got the comeuppance he deserved, as sometimes you have to create a scandal to end a scandal. And one more time we are reminded that there is a fine line between love and hate. Such a good story!.
