This elaborate, lore-filled fantasy, smelling of dusty library stacks and perfumed prose, will doubtless please those who enjoyed the first volume, The Summer Tree. Both are striking as unconscious but almost clinical catalogues of an adolescent world view, full of self-dramatization and self-pity, a desperation for instant status or celebrity, a preoccupation with lost love and death (which become equivalent totems) and a general lack of humor or perspective. I can’t even put into words....
How absolutely incredible this trilogy is. I can’t wait to read the final book.
This is one of many books I have read by this author, I admit that I read a lot and this author is in a league of his own. Whenever I read a book I always take time to highlight descriptive words I don’t hear all of the time and am not completely familiar with and read the definitions to widen my own vocabulary. Some books I read I don’t have to highlight any of the words as they seem to choose the easiest or first that comes to mind, but with this author I-am constantly and happily stopping and highlighting and learning the meanings and definitions of words -all of the time. This is one of many reasons I love to read his books because they are so intriguing and compelling to read, and quite often he ties his storytelling into historical fiction we may be familiar with. His level of storytelling is captivating and leagues ahead of many, his stories are amazing and they draw you in deeper as you go and often leaving me unable to put the books down! He uses words like a choreographer designs the steps and nuances of a dance.
