Not Drake's best, or even close
I love David Drake's writing, but the crisis of empire series shows little of it. The three books are co-written by three different writers, and it shows. This is not a trilogy, just three books set in the same universe. Similar to the Raj Whitehall / Center series in concept, but less coherent and less well executed.
I've read worse, but this isn't up to Drake's standard by any means.
