The War of the Worlds is considered the first space-invasion story. Wellsís format was modeled on that of Daniel Dafoeís, A Journal of the Plague Year, which appeared in 1722. The story is presented as factual, but is in fact, fiction. An unnamed narrator in London, a philosophical writer, is witness to an invasion of London and the southern counties of England. The invasion is not from a human enemy but from Martians who have landed a spacecraft on Horsell Common. The narratorís brother also tells his story has he tries to escape from England while accompanied by two women.
