New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter begins a dark, sexy new series—Rise of the Warlords—with a fan-favorite character from her beloved Lords of the Underworld series, Taliyah Skyhawk. The ice maiden faces off with her greatest enemy, a villain brutal beyond imagining.
For centuries, Taliyah Skyhawk has prepared to become Harpy General, leader of the deadliest female army in existence. One of the requirements? Remain a virgin. But, for a chance to save her people, she must wed the fearless leader of the Astra Planeta, Alaroc Phaethon.
The time has come for Roc to sacrifice another virgin bride to his god. There has never been a woman alluring enough to tempt him from his path. No warrioress powerful enough to overcome his incredible strength. No enchantress desirable enough to make him burn beyond reason. Until now.
With the clock ticking, war between husband and wife ignites. Except Taliyah never expected the merciless king to challenge the future she once envisioned. She certainly never anticipated the thrill of their battles turning into games… The problem is, only one spouse can survive.
Love is a battlefield in Showalter’s The Warlord.
Don't miss Ruthless, the second book in New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter's captivating and unforgettable Immortal Enemies series.
With characteristic sass and sensuality, Showalter launches her Rise of the Warlords fantasy romance series, a loose spin-off to her Lords of the Underworld novels. Roc Phaethon, Commander of the Astra Planeta, a group devoted to creating, destroying, and conquering worlds in the name of their god, Chaos, has a ritual to perform every 500 years: he must wed an immortal bride and sacrifice her after 30 days of marriage to secure victory for his soldiers. If his bride is still a virgin upon her death, he and his men receive an additional weapon to use against Chaos's son, Erebus. He undertakes this task with an unflinching sense of duty but he gets more than he bargained for when he weds Taliyah Skyhawk, a highly self-assured harpy bent on becoming General. Taliyah is determined to save her people from the Astra invasion, and nothing will stop her not even the secrets she carries or her scorching chemistry with Roc. The stakes are high as Taliyah and Roc fight for what they want, but the plot occasionally feels like filler between sex scenes. Liberal doses of humor help to balance the page-scorching heat as Showalter sets the stage for what promises to be a thrilling new series.
I started reading this in the morning and now it’s 8 p.m. and I gotta say 😭😮💨 I LOVE THIS AUTHOR SO MUCH! It’s funny, witty and 🥵!
If I could give it zero stars
I would. I love trashy smut, but this was so difficult to read. The sentences were poorly structured. The author kept adding new bits of world building almost constantly, kind of violating the rules of fantasy genre
A burning read
He’s an unmovable warlord who’s been tasked with sacrificing his bride to ensure victory in a millennium long war. She’s a headstrong harpy who will do anything to free her people. In a test of will, who will be victorious?
Taliyah the terror of all lands finds herself the unwitting bride of Alaroc Phaethon commander of the Astra Planeta. His only goals are to keep his new bride alive.. and a virgin for the next 30 days.
In the first book in the Rise of the Warlords series by Gena Showalter we are given a glimpse into what truest makes Taliyah Skyhawk cold-hearted. If you thought her other books were hot, prepare to be burned. You’ll tingle, burn and cry tears of sadness and joy as we follow Roc and Taliyah as they fight each other and themselves. I can’t wait for the next book!
