Publisher Description
The Way of St Cuthbert is arguably the most iconic pilgrimage route in the UK and perhaps even in Northern Europe. The route spans the border between Scotland and England and explores some delightfully picturesque country, including the Northumberland National Park.
St Cuthbert was a remarkable early Christian Saint, who knew how to bring people together and connect them with the important things in life. His legacy is inestimable, even today, for he has left behind an appreciation of nature and of wild places; this inspires and informs today’s conservation movement and reminds us of the importance of slowing down, paying attention and connecting to the natural world.
This guidebook has been written by Dr Glen Cousquer. Glen is an experienced wildlife vet, wildlife photographer, author, International Mountain Leader and wilderness guide, who now lectures in Conservation Medicine at the University of Edinburgh.
Glen first visited Lindisfarne in 1991 and has extensive knowledge of Scotland’s wildlife and wild places. He has also led ecological pilgrimages and mindfulness and nature retreats. He draws on this experience and on extensive background research to present a richly illustrated guide to this long-distance route. Particular attention is paid to the wildlife one can expect to encounter along the way and the guide also include a special section on the Farne Islands, where Cuthbert ended his life.
This version of the guide has been written with an emphasis on slowing down and connecting appreciatively to the places and experiences that will mark your journey. As such, it is a pilgrimage guide for this deeper connection has a spiritual aspect and allows us to explore our extended selves. The guide is not, however, written in a religious manner and offers a very gentle introduction to the experience of pilgrimage. You may particularly appreciate this approach if you recovering from a trauma or simply are needing to de-stress, slow down and reconnect with your self.
