The Way to the West

Emerson Hough was an American writer, mostly known for authorship of westerns and historical novels. He was practicing law in New Mexico before returning to Iowa and starting a writing career. His most notable works include "Story of the Cowboy", "Way of the West", "Singing Mouse Stories", etc.  

Published in 1903, “The Way to the West” is a series of studies of the manner in which the settlement of the West was brought about. Whence came this Western man, why came he, in what fashion, under what limitations? What are the reasons for the American or Western type? Is that type permanent? Have we actual cause for self-congratulation at the present stage of our national development? These are some of the questions that present themselves in that work.
