The Way West The Way West

Publisher Description

Winner of the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, The Way West is A.B. Guthrie Jr.’s celebrated sequel to The Big Sky, chronicling the perilous and hopeful journey of American pioneers across the Oregon Trail in the 1840s. The novel follows Senator William Tadlock, a visionary but rigid leader determined to guide a wagon train of settlers from Missouri to Oregon. Among them is Dick Summers, an experienced mountain man from The Big Sky, who serves as the party's scout and brings hard-earned wisdom to the harrowing trek.

As the group faces treacherous terrain, illness, and moral dilemmas, Guthrie delves into the personal transformations and cultural conflicts that defined westward expansion. The Way West is both an epic adventure and a meditation on leadership, sacrifice, and the drive to claim a new life in an unfamiliar land. With its masterful narrative and realistic portrayal of pioneer struggles, it solidifies Guthrie’s place as a major voice in American historical fiction.

The Way West

The story and author both awesome and spell- binding. Wonderful! It must have been incredible to actually have experienced this time. A.B. Guthrie made it so real.

The only disappointing thing in the whole story was the sloppy mis-spellings and obvious lack of editing. That has been a consistent factor in all these online books. This was one of the worst.
