When the Wiley Kids — middle-schoolers Neil Chandler, Kyle Baldwin, Millie Reyes, Sleater Wiley and Freddie Tanaka — pick up the wrong box from a local bakery, they are innocently drawn into a mysterious world of codes and cryptography. They decipher a first message, but that only leads to a second.


Meanwhile, a famous painting, The Cucamonga Moon, is stolen from a local gallery — in front of a hundred people — at the exact time predicted in one of the codes. The police believe it to be a coincidence, leaving the Wiley Kids to solve the mystery on their own. 


The kids discover additional codes, but they're more complex and harder to break: Biblical codes, codes used by Julius Caesar, and a military code used by the South in the Civil War. But the Wiley Kids persevere and learn how to break each one. In between, they encounter Gramps and his 1968 Chevy Suburban, the Bandana Man and a platter of moo shu pork burritos. They’re hot on the trail of the perpetrator, but do they have enough time to catch him?
