An immersive product
I consider this book to be a nice collection of lessons and activities that could be easily implemented into the classroom. It is not a strict text but rather more of a guide that encourages students to experiment with different types of writing. In other words, it leaves a lot of room for an instructor to play around and implement into a curriculum. The topics are diverse, including the mechanics of writing, poetry, political discourse, and even slang in the Information Era.
The book contains: descriptive lessons; gizmos such as embedded slideshows; personal essays written by the author; examples of student work from the author's institution; occasional essays written to teachers; and a class or homework assignment for every lesson. I think the layout and art are engaging and fun. Moreover, many of the essays are relevant to this generation of students, and the section on writing for standardized tests comes from the author's experiences with the Texas education system.
As with many first edition texts, there are several typos and mistakes which I hope will be ironed out by the second edition. Also, much of the middle portion of the book is lacking in interactive gadgetry which would give the iBook more of an edge over a paper book.
In summary, I'd give 5 stars for content and, unfortunately, more like 2 stars because there are errors in a writing textbook. However, I think the piece is too good for 3 stars, so I'll give it 4 stars overall.
An amazing compilation of literary goodies
Upon reading this book, one fact was definitely clear: The material covered is extensive. This textbook seemed to attack every crucial facet to learning the proper usage and application of the English language. Additionally, it's nice to see a book that includes writing by students of the author to help connect teacher and pupil to the content. This textbook covers material not ordinarily included in curriculum today.
This book is a MUST for high school as well as college students! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
I needed this book
Wow! This book answered my prayers. I haven't learned one thing in English for 3 years and when I found out I had to write 3 essays for college admissions, I totally panicked! A friend told me about this book..I checked it out and boy! am I glad I did! The chapters on revising, grammar and essays helped a lot, but I really enjoyed reading about the English language and the one on film criticism...Hey! Movies will never be the same!
