Tidewater Community College's enrollment in 2009-10 was up 25 percent over the previous year. Daniel DeMarte, TCC's vice president for academic affairs, said enrollment is continuing to increase this fall. And about 1,000 students are in apprenticeships with shipyard trade employers. In Virginia, 23 percent of job openings are expected to be in computer/information specialties. But only 3 percent of the 2010 graduates who took the ACT said they were interested in that field, according to Iowa City-based ACT.
