Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker--his classmate and crush--who committed suicide two weeks earlier. Hannah's voice tells him that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out why.

Clay spends the night crisscrossing his town with Hannah as his guide. He becomes a firsthand witness to Hannah's pain, and as he follows Hannah's recorded words throughout his town, what he discovers changes his life forever.

I, of course, never knew about the book before Netflix created it. And even though it was out, I waited until all four seasons were complete before I ventured to read the book. I loved both the original ending and the ending that the editor and Jay came up with.

I think Hannah’s death creates more of an impact for the readers and the viewers because as a whole, death is final.

Some Reasons Why Thirteen Reasons Why is One of the Best Books I Ever Read!

I read this book after I watched the Netflix Live-Action adaption. I had a chance to read it in high school, but I passed on it at the time and now regret doing so. Reading this book had a completely different effect on me than watching the show, and probably would’ve hit me differently as a young adult. Just to clarify, the show drew inspiration from the book and was not entirely accurate. The book did it way better in my opinion. I can not clarify how I couldn’t bring myself to stop reading this book, I simply could not put it down. The words were flying off the page and racing through my mind even long after I was done reading. The words that hit hard and true are words I’ll never forget. I’ve never had any experience with suicide or anything like that, but depression is something that I know all too well. This book delivered on so many different issues and topics that, in today’s day and age, are more at play now than ever in teenagers. I related to it and felt connected to it. It hits hard, so brace yourselves. Here’s one of my favorite quotes:

“Maybe you didn’t know what people thought of you because they themselves didn’t know what they thought of you. Maybe you didn’t give us enough to go on, Hannah.
If not for that party, I never would have met the real you. But for some reason, and I am extremely grateful, you gave me that chance. However brief it was, you gave me a chance. And I liked the Hannah I met that night. Maybe I could’ve even loved her.
But you decided not to let that happen, Hannah. It was you who decided.”

Absolutely amazing story. One of the best books I ever read! This iBook is a solid copy, works great on my iPad Mini (2019)!
