At the celebration of her seventeenth year, Etain Curran hopes to learn of the match her father, Bressal, has made for her. Instead Bressal brings an unwanted guest to dinner, the Viking Warlord and the offer isn't about marriage. Desperate to be favoured by the invaders, Bressal offers Etain to become a servant for the Warlord. Hoping to dissuade the Viking, her mother Aine brews a foul-smelling plant to use to repulse the Viking. After the Warlord's humiliation, Bressal is enraged and threatens to harm Aine. Etain knows she must act swiftly to protect her mother.

Soon after, her mother dies and Etain is alone. The Warlord wants his revenge and plans to use her as a thrall. Hunted by the Vikings, Etain must leave everything behind. Along the road she meets a shieldmaiden who teaches her that being a warrior is about using your talents to overcome your enemy in ways they never expected.
