Thiem, a former Oakland police detective and retired U.S. Army officer, offers insights into the prices paid by those sworn to protect and defend an increasingly obstructive and even hostile citizenry. His portrayal of a decent man's efforts to uphold civilization in a decaying urban jungle rings all too disturbingly true.

Excellent police suspense novel
Some of the finest police suspense writing I have ever read in my 66 years. Fabulous story with strong characters.
Sinclair is a Detective Sargent for Oakland PD. He works with Det Sgt Bannock. They are a perfectly balanced team with a high solve rate. She doesn’t hsve as much experience as her partner, but has street sense which helps.
The pace is fast and if you know Oakland you can see it easily from his descriptions.
