Richard Henry Dana Jr. was an American lawyer, politician, and author who is best known for writing the classic memoir Two Years Before the Mast. Dana was also notable for being a supporter of fugitive slaves and freedmen.

To Cuba and Back is a book that Dana wrote after traveling to Havana in 1859 at a time when the U.S. Senate was deciding whether or not it would annex the Spanish possession of Cuba.
