NOTHING IS MORE INTOXICATING
Reynaud St. Aubyn has spent the last seven years in hellish captivity. Now half mad with fever he bursts into his ancestral home and demands his due. Can this wild-looking man truly be the last earl's heir, thought murdered by Indians years ago?

OR DANGEROUS
Beatrice Corning, the niece of the present earl, is a proper English miss. But she has a secret: No real man has ever excited her more than the handsome youth in the portrait in her uncle's home. Suddenly, that very man is here, in the flesh-and luring her into his bed.

THAN SURRENDERING TO A DEVIL.
Only Beatrice can see past Reynaud's savagery to the noble man inside. For his part, Reynaud is drawn to this lovely lady, even as he is suspicious of her loyalty to her uncle. But can Beatrice's love tame a man who will stop at nothing to regain his title-even if it means sacrificing her innocence?

A most desirable book

One of the best books I’ve ever read. Emotional, impactful, touching, heartbreaking-you truly feel as if you’re part of it. While there are darker elements, it makes it feel more like you are apart of the story, I’ve read and re-read it.

Great Series

I read them backwards, now I am having to read from last to the first book. But each one is still a great read. This one is my favorite though :)

Outdated: Read a different Hoyt.

I read a lot of historical romances and I’ve really enjoyed many of EH’s books, and even loved a couple, but this one ain’t it.

The pacing of the story is uneven, the characters seem to behave erratically, and the heroine doesn’t have much personality of her own to speak of.

The hero is very possessive, which I know can be appealing in the right context but I think it comes across as objectifying and callous here.

But the main reason I wanted to specifically leave a review is the attitude towards Native Americans and colonialism that is a narrative throughout the book, where England is painted as “civilized” and cultured, and indigenous people as brutal, violent, dirty, and inferior.
Even the way Reynaud refers to his attraction to the blonde heroine feels like it has a touch of white supremacy to it.
If the book was from 1989 maybe I’d be more understanding but it came out in 2009.

Just skip it.
