To Infidelity and Back

At fourteen, Henry F. Lutz hears that God has already chosen who will go to heaven and who to hell—and that nothing anyone does can change it. The claim strikes like a thunderbolt, setting a praying boy’s faith against his demand that belief withstand reason.

Writing in the early twentieth century, Lutz looks back on a youth shaped by farm work, Scripture read aloud, and questions his religious teachers could not answer. Though he longs for the ministry, the young seeker fears becoming a hypocrite more than leaving the church. Books lead him toward Unitarianism and its open theological school, where every idea may be examined—but where even the nature of God, the Bible, and conscience comes under scrutiny. Each answer seems to demand another surrender. If reason keeps shifting the ground beneath his feet, where can he find truth that will hold?
