A solid gothic horror read
It almost defies belief that this book is a licensed Dungeons and Dragons novel. Were it not for the fairly consistent Ravenloft name checks, this book would read much like a traditional gothic horror-romance novel.
I liked the book quite a bit for its rather consistent feeling of uneasiness and I would say that tonally it does a good job of capturing how a Ravenloft game should feel. As an adaptation of D&D, I found it somewhat wanting but it is a good reflection of the 90s obsession with supernatural spookiness.
A good book if you like gothic horror or want to read a nice textbook example of how to build dread without revealing to much. Less exciting if you are looking for an action based D&D fantasy novel.
