At the start of this impressive James Bond pastiche from bestseller Horowitz (Moriarty) set in 1957 soon after the action of Goldfinger, a German rocket scientist working for the U.S. sells secrets about a forthcoming American launch. Meanwhile, Bond, who's living in London with Pussy Galore, of Goldfinger fame, travels to Germany to participate in an auto race, during which the Soviet SMERSH agency is planning to kill a British driver. (This section is based on original unpublished material written by Ian Fleming.) At the race, Bond encounters evil genius Sin Jai-Seong, a Korean multimillionaire; meets Jeopardy Lane, who has her own reasons for pursuing Jai-Seong; and discovers photos of an American rocket (the title refers to a "panic button" that can explode a malfunctioning rocket before it crashes). The sturdy plot involves a suitably diabolical and grandiose scheme. An excellent mimic of Fleming's prose, Horowitz delivers an entertainment sure to please James Bond fans.

While he lacks the true "Fleming Sweep", this the first Bond continuation novel I truly enjoyed and the only one I can recommend. This is the same Bond that Fleming wrote about and Horowitz does an affectionate and admirable imitation of Fleming's style. He slyly acknowledges the racism and sexism inherent in Fleming's work, while still managing to appease modern sensibilities. He teams Bond with a strong, independent woman and a gay man without compromising the basically fussy and Neanderthal character Fleming created, although, as in Fleming's novels, Bond is aware of his quirks and foibles, and is more liberal and open than even he is willing to admit. All this aside, Trigger Mortis is suspenseful and exciting on its own. There are a number of masterful sequences that would make Fleming proud, especially the racing section and the harrowing finale. It is a fast read I found almost impossible to put down. Bravo. Never thought I'd say this about a continuation author: please do another.
A Revived Childhood Experience
When I was in Jr. High, I began The Alex Rider series. A series that helped shape the way I thought as a boy. Captivated by risk and adventure, Storm Breaker and the rest of the series encapsulated my imagination. All these years later now in my senior year of college I heard about Trigger Mortis. Thank God for the Internet. This book brought me back to my thrill seeking roots and as I read my boyhood curiosity came exploding back to me through this book. My personal thanks to Anthony Horowitz.
The closest to Ian Fleming's than anyone!
This was the most enjoyable new James Bond book yet. I hope that they continue to use him to author more books moving forward.
Highly recommended if you enjoy Ian Fleming's style.
