True Irish Ghost Stories (Annotated‪)‬

True Irish Ghost Stories gathers a striking range of supernatural testimony, folklore, and psychical anecdote into a volume that illuminates Ireland's haunted imaginative landscape. Moving from ancestral houses and lonely roads to apparitions, banshees, poltergeists, and prophetic dreams, the collection blends oral tradition, documentary curiosity, and Gothic atmosphere. Its significance lies not only in the chill of individual narratives, but in the way they preserve a cultural archive of belief, memory, and place. St John D. Seymour and Harry L. Neligan approach their subject as collectors and interpreters of Irish supernatural lore, bringing together accounts that reflect the era's fascination with spiritualism, antiquarian inquiry, and the persistence of folk belief in modern life. The varied voices represented—clerical, domestic, rural, aristocratic, and communal—situate ghost stories within broader Irish histories of family, locality, religion, and storytelling, enriching the reader's sense of how the uncanny circulates through social experience. Readers interested in folklore, Irish studies, Gothic literature, or the history of supernatural belief will find this volume a valuable and engaging resource. It offers a rare opportunity to encounter multiple registers of haunting in one collection: evidentiary, literary, local, and legendary. True Irish Ghost Stories invites readers to consider how ghost narratives entertain, unsettle, instruct, and preserve dialogue between the living and the remembered dead.
