Publisher Description
Twelve stories. Four seasons. One city that taught the world to take pictures, and never quite got its own taken.
Rochester, New York, gave the world the snapshot, the photocopy, and the garbage plate, and then watched its giants shrink while its neighborhoods kept living. Twelve Exposures is a collection of twelve stories set across four decades of that city, from the opening day of Marketplace Mall in 1982 to a lake-effect night in 2026. Some are thrillers. Some are love stories, comedies, tragedies, or something stranger. All of them are Rochester: its old houses and corner stores, its snowbelts and its summers on the lake, its money and its lack of it, and the people who make it home.
WINTER
Five Stars (2026) — A broke night-shift rideshare driver and a young autistic piano prodigy race a lake-effect storm to the biggest performance of the kid's life at Kodak Hall.
The Coldest Winters Are in Rochester (1989) — Two FBI agents hunt through a frozen city while a killer stalks the Genesee River gorge.
The Final Call (1989) — Nine-year-old Jimmy Dorrs spends a snowy December Sunday working for his father and learns what kind of man his father is.
SPRING
666 South Avenue (2025) — A man who married into one of Rochester's oldest fortunes walks out on it for a tattoo artist in the South Wedge, and finds out what leaving costs.
Hearts, Minds, and Spirits (2024) — Shot, bleeding, and carrying seven photographs, a man runs through downtown Rochester. Nothing about the chase is what it seems.
The Last Easter (2000) — Twenty years old and living in New York, Jimmy Dorrs comes home to a father who is running out of time.
SUMMER
The Fourth of Get High (2026) — A Fourth of July party in a Corn Hill mansion brings together old friends, old crushes, and old grudges, and the night goes exactly where it shouldn't.
A Life Worth Living (2022) — A retired city mechanic wins sixty-four million dollars at sixty-eight and discovers he was doing fine before.
Things Got Out of Hand (1999) — One summer on Lake Avenue, a band, a pregnant girlfriend, a borrowed gun, and a Saturday night at the Penny Arcade that one man has replayed in a prison cell for twenty-seven years.
FALL
Grand Opening, Grand Closing (1982) — After the death of the woman who raised her, a Rochester woman watches old footage of a mall's opening day and sees something that can't be true.
First and Last Party with the Crew (1994) — Six boys from the 19th Ward squeeze an entire childhood into one last August day before high school splits them apart.
The Last Confidence Man (2026) — A drifter steps off a freight train with three hundred dollars and a face that looks like George Eastman's, and sets out to con his way to the top of Rochester society.
Written by a son of the city's 19th Ward, Twelve Exposures moves between crime and comedy, grief and grace, the past and the present, and is set in a Rochester that is real, remembered, and reimagined. Read one story or all twelve. Like the photographs this city once made for the whole world, each one captures a single moment that turns out to hold an entire life.
