Two Boys and a Fortune

A train is almost due when Mr. Tyler falls on the railway trestle—and fifteen-year-old Roy Pell is the only one close enough to reach him. With the engine bearing down, Roy must carry the helpless old man to safety.

On a blazing July afternoon by Riddle Creek, the Pell children are thinking about cooler places and the things their family cannot afford. Roy, who longs to be useful, has little time to dwell on money when Mr. Tyler needs help; the old miser has survived the trestle, but now fears he may die before he can make his will. He asks Roy to take him home and send for Sydney Pell, the young lawyer he trusts. What could make this lonely old man’s last business so urgent—and what will Roy find waiting at his house?
