Uncle Tom felt more unhappy than ever. He had hoped at least to have a little room which he could keep clean and tidy. But this hole he did not even have to himself. He had to share it with five or six others.

Beautifully written and heartbreaking
I read this with my second grader. When we came to the "n" word, we replaced it with "slaves". Uncle Tom faced incredible hardship with Christian valor.
This was a great book though very sad at the thought of many people dying. But some slaves found good homes
