The United State Marine Corps Aviation Squadron is rich in history, contributing significantly to the downfall of the Japanese troops in World War II. The squadron was activated as VMF-112 on 1 March 1942 at San Diego, California, under the command of Major Wilfred J. Huffman. A constant stream of groups and squadrons were dispatched to the South Pacific, including MAG-11, of which VMF-112 was a component. In recognition of its valor and its contributions to victory during its service on Guadalcanal, VMF-112 was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.
