Medical drama, gossipy lesbian romance, and angsty backstory all get equal time in Radclyffe's fifth PMC Hospitals romance (after Passionate Rivals). Fourth year surgery resident Zoey Cohen is mourning the loss of her friends-with-benefits setup when attractive ER attending Declan Black returns to work after a decade's absence. Declan left her hospital job for married life, and struggles with rejoining her old team two years after the car accident that killed her wife. But as she and Zoey work together managing the case of a profoundly injured resident, they develop an easy rapport that makes Declan wonder if she's ready to open herself up to new love. Radclyffe makes the hospital social environment believable in scenes that foreground the characters' humanity without glossing over the technical details of their work in the trauma center. Longtime fans will be pleased that Honor and Quinn, the couple from the 2005 series debut, also get significant story space. Though the pacing is off—with Declan and Zoey's jump from exploration to commitment coming both too late and too abruptly—fans of small community dynamics and workplace romance without ethical complications will find this hits the spot.

Another good story at PMC
I never get tired of reading (and re-reading) Radclyffe’s stories and especially love her series. I love that we get to see previous characters and how they are, or have, progressed in their worlds. I also enjoy learning about the hospitals and staff. The politic, procedures, hierarchy, etc. from a writer who has an impressive medical background and would really know. This story from the PMC hospital series continues almost from the day Passionate Rivals left off. Zoey was one of the main secondary characters in that book & I actually think I enjoyed this one even a bit more. I think you could probably read any of these as stand alones, it’s so much more enjoyable to read them in sequence and understand, for example, why Linda (married to Robin) is having their 3rd(?) child since her wife had the others, etc. The sex is passionate, the angst is real, the dialogue is thoughtful and sometimes funny and true to each character. You truly do feel for & end up caring for each character in this book. I really hope there is another with Dani as the main. She’s been in these last two as a somewhat comical & endearing character. It would be interesting to see what she’s covering under her wit, charm & seemingly carefree attitude. Buy this book! ~castaway
Still a good read
Radclyffe is one of my favorite authors. However, this is my least favorite I’ve read. It bounced all over the place and re-introduced characters in a way like they hadn’t already been introduced a chapter earlier.
