Bringing to mind again just how much this series has nestled itself into my heart, T.J. Kline’s fifth book in the series just keeps the warm feelings alive with this second chance at love and life story. The fourth I’ve read, Change of Heart is the story of Leah and Gage, and the changes brought to them together and separately.
Leah has never had an easy life, and her choice of career as a children’s therapist reflects that history. What is not unique about Leah, however, is her own lack of effort put into her own growth to put the past behind her and move forward. This makes her a bit of a prickly hedgehog when it comes to adult relationships, even as she is well-respected in her field, as evidenced by her new position at Heart Fire Ranch.
Gage is a ‘sort of’ local, with family near Heart Fire, recently back to visit after a bit of difficulties in a business that had always been seemingly effortless. A bit shaken by the turn of events, he’s back to regroup and readjust, and never expected to be rescuing a damsel in distress from a broken down car.
These two are SO in need of the magic that is the Heart Fire Ranch. Leah slowly learns that she doesn’t always have to be in control, with her walls up, and that Gage isn’t someone intent on hurting her, but curious about her. He’s just an all-around good guy, never pushy and VERY patient with Leah’s back and forth behavior. His time away has shown him the importance of real friends and family, and the attitude adjustment after his difficulties have him seeing things with fresh eyes.
Slowly their relationship develops, in an organic and plausible way, and with the wonderful dialogue, great cast of secondary characters and a litter of kittens there is plenty to love in this story. A touch more poignant and drawing on reader’s empathy, T.J. Kline has added yet another wonderful moment in the lives touched by the Harts and their ranch.
