“Touching and complex…Tucker unerringly hits all the high notes of romance—the spark, the emotional depth, the mental and physical struggles—while creating a couple who seem perfectly attuned even when they are in conflict.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)
Twenty-four-year-old truck stop waitress and single mother Catherine Wright has simple goals: to give her five-year-old daughter a happy life and to never again be the talk of the town in Balsam, Pennsylvania (population three thousand outside of tourist season).
And then one foggy night, on a lonely road back from another failed date, Catherine saves a man’s life. It isn’t until after the police have arrived that Catherine realizes exactly who it is she has rescued: Brett Madden, hockey icon and media darling.
Catherine has already had her fifteen minutes of fame and the last thing she wants is to have her past dragged back into the spotlight, only this time on a national stage. So she hides her identity. It works. For a time.
But when she finds the man she saved standing on her doorstep, desperate to thank her, all that changes. There’s an immediate connection, and it’s more electric than the bond of two people who endured a traumatic event. It’s something neither of them expected. Something that Catherine isn’t sure she can handle; something she is afraid to trust.
Because how long can an extraordinary man like Brett be interested in an ordinary woman like Catherine...before the spark fades?
Bestseller Tucker's touching and complex contemporary pairs privacy-loving Catherine Wright, a single mother in Balsam County, Penn., with garrulous Brett Madden, the wealthy, handsome captain of the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team. When Catherine spots a wrecked sports car, the driver dead and the passenger unconscious, she has no clue that the latter is superstar Brett. Catherine manages to free him as the car flames over, only to become the focus of a media circus, a circumstance that brings back terrible memories of when her high school teacher turned her love life into the talk of Balsam County. Catherine attempts to normalize her life by ruthlessly keeping her regular schedule. Brett disguises his fears of career-ending injuries with strained humor and bravado. Each time they meet, ostensibly to deal with the media, the attraction between them grows stronger. Tucker unerringly hits all the high notes of romance the spark, the emotional depth, the mental and physical struggles while creating a couple who seem perfectly attuned even when they are in conflict.
Sort of skips right over the “getting to know you” part and goes straight from meeting to in love. But overall enjoyable.
A sweet love story!
This book is an overall easygoing love story between two people that meet in an unfortunate situation.
I agree with another review that states that the Epilogue could have been better, especially ending the book the way the author did. Meaning, I felt like the author kind of threw the ending together and ended the story fast without much detail. There were a few details that were left untied, that kind of thing.
However, the novel is short and sweet and perfect for a weekend read!
LOVED Brett and Cath
I seriously loved Brett and Cath. So sweet and real. Great read.
