Unveiling a Parallel is an early feminist science fiction novel published in 1893. The book’s title page attributes it to “Two Women of the West”—authors Alice Ilgenfritz Jones and Ella Merchant of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Jones and Merchant’s male hero travels to Mars in an “aeroplane” (one of the first English uses of the word) and visits two “Marsian” societies, both of which contain a greater degree of gender equality than 1890s Earth. The story is an early example of utopianism and interplanetary travel in science fiction.
