He warns Harper "there're things... waiting for you" and tells her to look into her past. For Harper, that means flying to California to visit her overbearing mother and go through the papers of her father, who killed himself after his receptionist's suspicious death. Harper finds a suicide note addressed to her and disturbing journal entries about supernatural happenings. Once back in Seattle, Harper agrees to help local vampire Edward Kammerling fight off some London vampires, leading to a spirited smack-down with old foes. Richardson continues to develop strong, intriguing plots, and fans will enjoy learning about Harper's childhood and seeing some of her literal ghosts put to rest.

This is the book we have all waited for...
You may say "prequel" but it isn't that. This adventure happens now -- and it challenges Harper to confront all she thought she knew about both her past and her present. Many things that happened in all four previous novels are now stitched together such that we know Ms. Richardson had everything in this series planned before she ever lifted the pen to write the first word in the first book! (If not, she has done a masterful job of creating reasons *why* those things happened in previous novels.)
The world Harper exists in does not romanticize vampires and creatures of the night. I actually really like this. When the "Greywalker" series sets rules for a species (vampires) or environment (the Grey) -- those rules must be abided-by. It is nice, though, that the author does not rely on the old "Wait for the sun to rise -- They cannot attack us during the day." to solve Harper's problems. I found myself dreading it each time Harper travels into the Grey -- just waiting the reappearance of the "Guardian".
I will say that I found myself re-reading many many paragraphs in this novel -- trying to wrap my mind around what was going on...simply because my mind was screaming: "THAT's why 'such-and-such' happened two books ago!" I was my own worst enemy trying to connect the dots between events two or three books ago -- and unfortunately ending up guessing wrong each time!
Kat Richardson quickly became my one of my "must-reads" with her first Greywalker novel. She has quickly risen to "Why isn't this a HBO series?" This is a must-read!
