Bertie Wooster's latest escape from London lands him at his terrifying Aunt Agatha's country house, where a mysterious telegram telling him to "meet perfect strangers" promises only trouble. The "stranger" turns out to be old friend Bingo Little, secretly employed as tutor to Cousin Thomas and living in fear of recognition, while Aunt Agatha insists Bertie behave like a model of sober respectability for the visiting cabinet minister, Mr. Filmer. With smoking, drinking, and any trace of fun forbidden, Bertie is trapped in a world of golf, social strain, and concealed financial disasters, as Bingo confesses he has lost Rosie's money on a horse bet and taken the job in desperation. The situation spirals when Thomas, inspired by Treasure Island, maroons Filmer on an island in the lake. Bertie and Jeeves row out in a thunderstorm, only to find Filmer stranded on the Octagon roof and besieged by a furious swan. Jeeves's calm ingenuity saves the day, but back in town Bertie is drawn into fresh embarrassment involving Gwladys Pendlebury, Lucius Pim, and Beatrice Slingsby. A peace offering of roses leads to a confrontation with Beatrice's formidable husband, and a final misunderstanding ends in spectacular comic ruin, with Jeeves once again left to tidy up Bertie's wreckage.
