A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE OF LOVE
I really enjoyed this novel! Ms. Blackburn has an uncommon writing style that also makes its way into the plotline of her novels. “Virtue Us” is no different. Raine Dodge is a computer engineer who leaves her present employer when she gets a better offer from a company she initially believes is a competitor of her present employer. She soon discovers her new employer sells its employers’ designs to her prior employer. She & her team design a “social android” created to be a mate. After the last war, the majority of men were killed, & there was a huge disparity between the numbers of women & men. Thus, the new breed of androids fullfilled the need for males. After a time men began to demand female androids. Thus, the precarious balance of nature was tipped into mechanical chaos.
The author proposes the idea that, given these conditions, men would no longer be necessary. How far will the human race travel before we are no longer human & the natural world is subsumed by AI?
This was such an enjoyable novella. Ms. Ellison has succeeded in creating empathetic & developed main characters in the space of 91 pages. The plot was unique & thought provoking.
