Twelve-year-old Molly and her ten-year-old brother, Michael, have never liked their seven-year-old stepsister, Heather. Ever since their parents got married, she's made Molly and Michael's life miserable. Now their parents have moved them all to the country to live in a house that used to be a church, with a cemetery in the backyard. If that's not bad enough, Heather starts talking to a ghost named Helen and warning Molly and Michael that Helen is coming for them. Molly feels certain Heather is in some kind of danger, but every time she tries to help, Heather twists things around to get her into trouble. It seems as if things can't get any worse.
But they do—when Helen comes.

My 4th Grade Teacher read this to us in clasd
I’m 21 now and long our of my elementary days. This book always stuck with me (that and The Dollhouse Murders). I’m rereading it now and immediately brought but to it like the first time all over again. It’s lovely to feel as though a good memory has not be lost to the fate of time. Highly recommend the read of your into creepy ghostly stuff!
This is my favorite book written by Mary downing haun. She is an amazing author! My favorite book of all time is ‘out of my mind by Sharon M Draper ‘ but this is my second most favorite book of all time ❤️❤️❤️. I would recommend this to anyone who can handle a scare. I love the fact that these book have good endings and don’t leave you hanging though. I love goosebumps books but they have terrible endings that leave you hanging which drives me so CRAZY so I’m glad these don’t do that. Is Mary gonna write any new books? It would be wonderful if she did. I rlly am hoping so.
I loved it soo much all the spooks and just I loved it!
