Walk Humbly

A unique and heartfelt portrait of President Jimmy Carter by his beloved grandson, illuminating the everyday values and lessons he shared with his family—and with us.

When U.S. President Jimmy Carter passed away in late 2024, he left behind a legacy of humanitarianism and exceptional service to people the world over, delivered in words and deeds from both in and beyond the White House. But to Jason Carter, he was more than a lifelong public servant: he was simply Papa, a cherished grandfather.

Building on the moving eulogy that Jason delivered in Washington’s National Cathedral, Walk Humbly is a candid, often humorous, and deeply personal tribute to the former president and a mediation on his legacy as it has been carried forward by his eldest grandson. Interweaving stories from throughout their lives together, from his childhood to his own emergence as a political force, Jason offers readers an intimate view of this iconic American. President Carter had his faults, as we all do: he could be prickly and short-tempered; he was often stubborn and impatient. But he also lived life to his fullest, and that is where his example holds the most enduring, important lessons: on loving and protecting the natural world; on understanding how to make the most of our limited time on this planet; and on approaching everyone we meet with openness, curiosity, and humility.

At a time when we could all use a reminder of America's unwavering values and principles, Walk Humbly is a beacon of light, providing a perspective on our thirty-ninth president that has never been offered before, by a man entrusted by Jimmy Carter and the Carter family to carry on his grandfather’s legacy. It invites readers to share in the life lessons that Jason learned at the knee of one of the greatest men of a generation, and to contemplate how they, too, might change the world.
