Sarah Goldman, one of two narrators of this suspenseful if farfetched domestic thriller from Bailey (Woman on the Edge), has just moved from Vancouver to her husband Daniel's hometown of Toronto, to get as much distance as possible from the nanny she blames for almost tearing her family apart, when she discovers hidden cameras in their newly rented home. Flashback to the previous summer. The other narrator is personable med student Holly Monroe, whose stepmother has orchestrated the nanny gig to score points with Daniel, a tech company COO and potential investor in the Monroe family–owned pharmaceutical firm. Holly seems the sort of responsible, responsive individual almost any mom would feel fortunate to have shooting hoops with her six-year-old son—or is she just too good to be true? The alternating accounts of Sarah and Holly, each of whom hides a disturbing secret, help to build tension, as the already hypervigilant Sarah is pushed to the breaking point by anonymous texts, intrusive neighbors, and increasingly creepy occurrences. Only the contrived final twists disappoint. Bailey displays enough storytelling prowess to suggest she can do better next time.
