The mermaid Lí Ban has long studied humans, fascinated by their strange customs and exotic lives. But when she begins dreaming of a life she never lived, she becomes convinced she once walked the surface world as a human.

Desperate to reclaim what she has lost, she bargains with a sea spirit, trading her tongue in exchange for legs. But the magic comes with a cruel condition: she must win the heart of the man she once saved from drowning. If he should ever wed another, she will lose her soul.

As her dreams grow stronger, Lí Ban discovers that winning his love is only part of the bargain. The life she remembers may hide secrets she has forgotten, and the past she seeks to reclaim may not be the prize she dreamt of.
