"This short but profoundly moving novel by the young Brazilian writer is one of the finest explorations of love you will find anywhere this year."—John Freeman, The Boston Globe
After a falling out, Cora and Julia reunite for a long-planned road trip through Brazil. As they drive from town to town, the complications of their friendship resurface. By the end of the trip, they must decide what the future holds, in a queer, coming-of-age debut novel that has been celebrated in Brazil.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
This is the kind of novel you sink into like a warm bath. When they were secret teen lovers at a suburban all-girls school, rebellious Cora and good-girl Julia frequently daydreamed about road tripping together through their native Brazil. Now, Cora, a fashion student in Paris, and Julia, a journalism major in Montreal, reunite to make their youthful dream come true. Author Carol Bensimon takes her own sweet time doling out details about what ended the young women’s romance, shifting easily back and forth between their meandering road trip and Cora’s memories of the past. We particularly loved how the friends’ journey rocks their perceptions of their home country’s people and politics. We All Loved Cowboys is a quiet gem, a smart coming-of-age novel threaded with heartache and humor.
